FAQ's
We asked Julie our Senior Consultant, to answer some frequently asked questions:
"What does an employment agency actually do?"
We offer a central location for employers (clients) to register job vacancies each day and we share
this information with people seeking work (candidates) who have registered their CVs with us. At the
moment in Jersey there are more jobs than suitable/experienced people so there's often a choice of
several positions you can consider and apply for.
"Will using an employment agency give me an advantage?"
Yes. We have helped hundreds of people get the job they wanted. Many of the jobs we have are not advertised
in the local media by companies. If you register with us, you will have access to more vacancies than someone
who just monitors the paper each week. Also we help prepare your CV so that it is factual, accurate and above
industry standard to make it appealing to the employers. Additionally we have good relationships with our
clients' Human Resources departments so your confidential details go straight to the right person.
"Do you deal with 'normal' people as well as the high flyers?"
Absolutely. We help all job seekers from £15k to £100k+, whether you are a school leaver, administrator,
manager or executive director level with no office experience or decades of professional success. Mostly
full time but also some part-timers too. Most jobs require at least 5 GCSEs with grades C and above and 5
years residency but not all, it depends on which area you are looking at. Good work references are an
essential part of employment checks, so you should mention any past problems with a previous employer
to your recruitment consultant.
"Is it just banking careers you deal with?"
No. Our clients are an exciting portfolio of small and large businesses with vacancies in finance, law,
secretarial, human resources, marketing, information technology, charity management, fund administration,
intellectual property, retail, internet warehousing companies, accountancies, trust and private banks or
stockbrokers.. the only areas we don't focus on are government roles, teaching, health, beauty,
agriculture or tourism.
"I'm not happy at work but I'm so nervous about leaving, can you help?"
Yes. At Recruitment Services we have all been in that same predicament in the past. Most people feel the
same as you do. Talking through your current situation with our recruitment consultant will help you consider
your options. Remember we are independent, know Jersey's employment market 'like the back of our hand' and there
is no pressure or obligation to take things further.
"Is it expensive to use your services?"
Our advice and services are completely free of charge to you as a candidate. There's no catch! Our consultants
are happy to help, they are salaried not commission based, so advice is impartial and they always have your best
interests as top priority not a sales target (unlike many competitors). The employers who use us to help them
find their ideal person pay our fees. You may be interested to know that the fee they pay is based on a
percentage of your new basic salary if you are successful in getting the job.
"How do I register?"
You contact us to make an appointment by telephone or email. We only permit one candidate in the office per
hour to aid confidentiality. You have an initial meeting with one of our qualified recruitment consultants,
which takes about 45 minutes. The most popular time is between 11am to 2pm to fit in people's lunch hour but
we are open from 8.30am until 5pm so you can choose which time you prefer. The meeting focuses on your CV to
date, your ambitions, your preferences, and then we come up with ideas and show you current job descriptions.
"Can I trust you to keep my salary and details confidential?"
We take the Data Protection Act seriously. We are professionally qualified consultants with many successful
years experience in recruitment, Human Resources and business management. Our integrity and respect for
confidentiality has never been called into doubt. Your information is not discussed externally with anyone
without your prior approval and then only for the purpose of finding you a new job.
"What do you expect from me?"
Please be honest. If you've already been interviewed for a job we suggest then say so. Please do not lie
about your level of experience or qualifications. It wastes people's time and you risk being made a fool at
interview stage or thrown in at the deep end if you get the job. Ask your recruitment consultant for advice,
remember they are there to help you.
"What if I register but then change my mind?"
No problem at all, please just let us know. We'll be pleased to welcome you back again in the future.
Many people decide to give their current employer another month or so and return if things haven't improved.
"Is it okay to register with other agencies too?"
We have an excellent reputation with local businesses large and small for providing good candidates
(not all of our competitors do). Take a look at our client testimonials. We prefer to be your sole
agency as we're effective and trustworthy. Some other agencies rush and make mistakes, which can
effect your chances of being short-listed. If you are registered with another agent, do let us
know so that we can avoid going over 'old ground' and focus on new avenues.
